Mark Jenkins Meaning is Overrated

21.01.2010 - 18.02.2010
Carmichael Gallery presents "Meaning Is Overrated," a solo exhibition of new hyper realistic conceptual works and site-specific installation pieces by Mark Jenkins that reconsider the aesthetic and practical qualities of the human body. Works range from those in which the human is recast as a specialized object, such as Spokes (attached to this email), which features a tape cast sculpture of a girl fashioned to function as a bike, to those in which human posture is contorted to resemble that of another animal. Each piece is “an exploration of evolution within the realm of the absurd,” says Jenkins.

Dan Witz Dark Doings

05.11.2009 - 03.12.2009
Carmichael Gallery invites you to attend Dark Doings, a solo exhibition of new works by Dan Witz. This is the Brooklyn based artist’s first US west coast solo exhibition.

In Dark Doings, Witz will showcase a selection of pieces from his expansive summer street project of the same name. Created both for the street and gallery, the subtle, haunting images of human and animal faces trapped behind dirty glass windows are inspired by a recent visit earlier in the year to the red light district of Amsterdam.

In speaking about the philosophy behind this body of work, Dan explains, “I’m trying to exploit our collective tendency towards sleepwalking by inserting outrageous things right out there in plain view that are also practically invisible. My goal is to make obvious in your face art that ninety-nine percent of the people who walk by won’t notice. Eventually when they stumble upon one or find out about it I’m hoping they’ll start wondering what else they’ve been missing.”

Artwork at the show will comprise of mixed media on digital prints on plastic, presented either framed or mounted to wood doors, the latter serving as both canvas and contextual framework through which the work can be viewed. A selection of photographs depicting the Dark Doings series in situ will also be exhibited at the show. They will be displayed alongside the piece with which they correspond.

Dan Baldwin Disillusion

10.09.2009 - 01.10.2009
Baldwin bridges the gap between abstract and figurative painting to create a landscape that simultaneously reflects reality, the power of the imagination and the private, inner workings of his mind. His style has a unique aesthetic which is difficult to categorize. Working by instinct, it can change dramatically depending on the subject matter he is exploring and the emotions he is channeling. His candid expressivity, playful manipulation of iconography and vibrant application of color, mark making and mixed media reflect his continued interest since his days as an art student in the works of Pollock, Warhol, Basquiat, Rauschenberg, Twombly and Bacon.

The London Police Brother's in Arms

10.09.2009 - 01.10.2009
This new show a celebration of The London Police’s ten year anniversary. The show features works on canvases, a photographic montage, a site-specific installation and a short film documenting the artists’ creative process. The show’s title reflects both the film (a social experiment about personal space and the artistic and private challenges presented while handcuffed to another person) and the brotherly friendship of partners Chaz and Bob, who have withstood a decade of adventures around the world to present their most focused and exciting body of work yet. This new series of boldly monochromatic pieces pay homage to the city of angels and the classic films of their childhood, such as “Back to the Future” and “Star Wars”. Recognizable imagery is integrated into the symbolic London Police world of smiling characters and futuristic cityscapes. Building upon successful shows in London and Amsterdam during the spring, the collective’s synthesis of high and low culture in “Brothers in Arms” allows for a greater conversation of aesthetics, psychology and globalization.

A Mirror Distorted Group Show

06.08.2009 - 27.08.2009
Carmichael Gallery is proud to present A Mirror Distorted, an all-female international group show featuring new works canvas, paper and mixed media fabric by artists Andrea Michaelsson, Candice Tripp, Cherri Wood and Pam Glew.

Retro chic and urban grit unite in the work of Andrea Michaelsson, whose portraits of starlets and beauties exude unabashed spontaneity and sophisticated feminism. Using a lush range of acrylic, watercolor, ink and spray paint, she interprets the glamour of early twentieth century American fashion and cinema with an ironic European edge.

Candice Tripp has produced a series of oil and inks on canvas entitled “Fib-Lore”. The pieces illustrate classic lies told to children to discourage naughty behavior, yet which instill a fear that does more harm than good. While Candice’s subject matter and use of negative space are intentionally disturbing, her innocence and wit furnish the scenes with a burst of narrative force.

The floating, brooding figures in Cherri Wood’s new works on canvas are engulfed by emptiness and despair. The pairing of muted blacks and grays against stark white canvas magnifies her subtle exploration of the human form and psyche. Several of Cherri’s pieces contain quotes and dialogue culled from classic plays and short stories, providing an added narrative layer.

Pam Glew presents a series of pieces hand-crafted from denim, linen, and vintage Italian, Iraqi and American flags. Collectively entitled “Culture Clash”, these works depict the faces of women and children in attitudes of beauty, fear, vulnerability and power. Pam’s eclectic imagery is culled from horror film stills, contemporary Western icons and the photography of war-torn states

Thais Beltrame When All The Stars Are Gone

07.05.2009 - 28.05.2009
When All The Stars Are Gone is a poetic glimpse of the world as perceived by Thais. Looking to the skies as inspiration, the artist reflects upon solitude, beauty, and the transient nature of being. “Supposedly all the stars we see today have been dead millions of years,” she muses. “Perhaps this is why human beings feel so alone: we live beneath a sky which no longer exists.”

In this newest body of work, Thais’ trademark wistful children are changing, growing stronger, wiser, and more aware of their surroundings. From this growth emerge new fears and dilemmas, however, as observed in the artist’s shift from negative space to a brooding application of earthy watercolors. Such depth enhances the delicate innocence that gives Thais’ work its extraordinary power.

Boxi Grey Area

09.04.2009 - 30.04.2009
“I am drawn to the incongruous narrative in figuration. My works aspire to polarize the stability of what is at first perceived to be harmless or sweet but in reality turns out to be pathetically desperate or tragic or viceversa. A dark disillusioned romanticism pervades throughout… (along with) confrontational themes, such as paranoia, disappointment, expectation, grief, mistrust and other upbeat reflections of our times... It is in this state of reflection, this ‘grey area’ of ambiguity and blurred truth that I have found myself in, a place where trends and crashes in the market aggressively threaten and pressurize social behavior. Making life-sized figures that articulate this uncertainty is a way for me to come to terms with the phrase ‘of our time’.” - Boxi

Hush Hymn to Beauty

05.03.2009 - 26.03.2009
Hush's work has been described as a sensory assault of shape, color, and character. Inspired by the portrayal of the female form in art, the artist builds up and tears down layers of paint and images as he works, "letting the canvas and marks take their own path." The result is an enigmatic synthesis of anime, pop-infused imagery, graffiti, and graphic design that exposes the conflict between power and decay, innocence and sexuality, and the fusion of Eastern and Western culture. Work in the show will include Acrylic Paint, Screen Print, Spray Paint, Ink, and Tea on Canvas and Wood as well as a site specific installation.

Malicious Descent Group Show

12.07.2008 - 27.08.2008
Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art is pleased to announce MALICIOUS DESCENT, a five man group show featuring new artwork by young American artists Blinky, Downtimer (image above), Dan Fleres, Josh Taylor, and Zoso. The showcase of pop-surrealist, lowbrow, and graffiti-inspired pieces encompasses a wide range of media, including acrylic, spray paint, oils, ink, collage, and sculpture.

Los Angeles artist Blinky's confident hand infuses what are often dark, dangerous scenes with vibrant colors and a wry sense of humor. Drawing inspiration from pop culture and his infinite imagination, Blinky's works of acrylic, ink, and spray paint on wood and canvas both startle and engage as his trademark girls, cats, and monkeys play with and defend themselves from evil squid, giant milkshakes, and the heroes and villains of comic books, cult films, and cartoons.

The juxtaposition and frequent battle between the natural and man-made worlds provides Downtimer with the opportunity to explore the ways in which these opposing forces interact, attack, and even complement each other. With a focus on depth, flow, and perspective, Downtimer's new works range from abstract graffiti to figurative and three-dimensional pieces. Although his technique often varies, the interplay of natural patterns remains at the core of his art. "These patterns are complex, yet totally sporadic and free," he says, "Perfect yet completely imperfect. I call them 'planned imperfections'."

Life and all of its complexities is the source of artistic inspiration for Dan Fleres and what pushes him to take his work to new levels. Through his experimentations with acrylic, paper, and mixed media on canvas, wood, and found objects, Fleres creates streamlined portraits of mournful yet vividly colored characters against skillfully rendered backgrounds. His work is flavored with his subtle yet insightful views of pop culture and society.

Florida's Josh Taylor unveils his latest collection of artwork, featuring many of his much-loved characters plus some exciting new additions, who do not fail to captivate the farthest regions of the viewer's imagination. For MALICIOUS DESCENT, Taylor builds upon past themes of girls, tentacles, and "Japanese things" to create a private world peopled with oddly lovable, alien-like beings, their wide eyes pooling with secret emotion. Taylor works mainly with acrylic and ink on wood, dabbling occasionally in mixed media and collage to give each piece a unique texture and depth.

Los Angeles based artist, Zoso, delves into the vast recesses of his imagination to create his provocative artwork. The surreal edge to his newest pieces, which include oils on panel and a hanging sculpture, reflect his current introspection and observations of both home and abroad. The soft texture of oil paired with his stimulating subject matter and distorted imagery complements the dualistic nature of Zoso's personal wanderlust and his perception of the damaging effects of the media and government on individuals.
